Shepherd’s Center wins award

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Shepherd's Center of Greater Winston-Salem has received the 2008 Joel A. Weston Jr. Memorial Award for Non-Profit Excellence.

Winners of the award, which honors local nonprofit health and human-service agencies that demonstrate organizational excellence, receive $10,000 from the Joel A. Weston Jr. Memorial Award Endowment Fund.

Formed in 1985, the ministry is an affiliate member of The Shepherd's Centers of America in Kansas City, Mo., that works to support and promote successful ageing through programs and services, and volunteer and support opportunities for older adults.

Headed by Sam Matthews, executive director, The Shepherd's Center has over 2,000 members and over 500 active volunteers who provide over 25,000 volunteer hours a year.

The award was established and endowed by the family and friends of Joel Weston, who was senior executive at Hanes Cos. and served from 1980 through 1982 as board president of United Way of Forsyth County.
