State’s arts groups get $7.7 million

RALEIGH, N.C. - Federal and sate stimulus funds are trickling down to North Carolina arts organizations that play a role in the economic, educational and cultural well-being of the state.

A total of $7.7 million in funds from North Carolina lawmakers, the National Endowment for the Arts and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will be distributed in 342 grants, 16 artist fellowships, three documentary grants and three internships.

Federal stimulus funds totaling $718,850 will be used to preserve 104 jobs that otherwise may have fallen victim to the recession.

And while the state received 79 applications for Creative Workforce Grants, which range in size from $10,000 to $25,000 each, only 18 were funded.

"More than 13.6 million people participated in Arts Council-funded projects in North Carolina last year," Linda A. Carlisle, state secretary of cultural resources, says in a statement. "Children make up about a quarter of that total."
