StepUp chief steps down

RALEIGH, N.C. -- After about a year and a half on the job, Jennie Armstrong stepped down as executive director of StepUP Ministry on Feb. 1.

She was succeeded by Steve Swayne, who has served as the organization's associate director since early 2008.

"It has been a difficult decision, but in the interests of my family and an orderly transition at StepUp, I believe it is the right time to make this move," Armstrong says in a statement.

She says her husband will retire during the first quarter of this year.

During her tenure at StepUp, a Raleigh-based nonprofit that helps at-risk community members become self-sufficient, Armstrong helped diversify the group's funding sources, broadened support and participation from local congregations, and strengthened its capabilities in operations and children's programs.

Swayne comes to his new post with 16 years of management experience, most recently with a national real-estate marketing company.

He also spent seven years with Young Life and held marketing positions with two National Basketball Association organizations.
