Sustainable North Carolina halts work

RALEIGH, N.C. -- After more than a decade of promoting sustainable economic development in the state, Sustainable North Carolina is suspending operations as it reevaluates its future.

Effective immediately, the Raleigh-based nonprofit is undergoing a "quiet period," during which it will assess its programs and determine its future path.

During that time, which remains undetermined, the organization will end all educational and assistance programming and will not accept new memberships. 

Henry McKoy, chair of the organization's board and president of Fourth-Sector Financial, declined to comment for this story.

Sustainable North Carolina was created in 1998 to help create a climate that encourages economic prosperity while spurring social and environmental responsibility.

During that time, it created the Sustainable Business Council, a membership group of companies that support and learn from each other in their efforts to create environmental, social and economic prosperity.

Current members of the council include Burt's Bees, Lenovo, Southern Energy Management and Cherokee Investment Partners.

In 2003, Sustainable North Carolina launched an awards program that has recognized more than 50 businesses and people across the state for their efforts to combine social and environmental stewardship solid business performance.
