Triangle United Way short of goal

MORRISVILLE, N.C. -- By extending its 2008 fundraising campaign by a month, Triangle United Way raised $17 million, closer to but still shy of its goal of $19.5 million.

The campaign took place as economic woes in the U.S. led to a spike in demand for United Way services and a drop in charitable giving.

"We know giving was difficult for some companies and individuals this year, which makes their contributions even more meaningful for those people in our community who are struggling and truly in need of United Way agency services," David Strong, the 2008 campaign chair, says in a statement.

Included in the total is $10.25 million raised for the Give United fund that provides support to United Way partner agencies in Durham, Orange and Wake counties.

The goal for the fund was $11.7 million.

Over 800 local companies sponsored United Way workplace campaigns for their employees, who together provided about three-quarters of the total raised.

Another 20 percent of the total came through corporate gifts, while the remainder was raised through events and donations from individuals.

The campaign included about 100 Tocqueville Society members, who each gave more than $10,000.

More than 2,500 people provided leadership gifts of $1,200 or more.

The United Way is still accepting donations. Contributions can be made online at http://www.unitedwaytriangle.org/, by calling 919.460.8687, or by mail at 1100 Perimeter Park Dr., Suite 112, Morrisville, N.C. 27560.
