UNC-Chapel Hill raises $271.25 million

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill posted its second-highest fundraising year in fiscal 2009, bringing in $271.25 million in gifts from more than 75,000 donors.

When factoring in pledges, the school raised $290.4 million in the fiscal year ended June 30.

The 2009 commitments will fund 21 endowed professorships and a total of 86 undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships.

"Our supporters have been tremendously generous," Matt Kupec, the school's vice chancellor for advancement, says in a statement. "Despite this being a down year for the economy, they've shown remarkable dedication to Carolina."

Large gifts include $666,000 from Sallie Shuping-Russell, alumnus and current trustee, to start a new course featuring writers who will hold a professorship in the creative writing department.

A six-year $22.9 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will fund a project designed to improve reproductive health for the urban poor in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

And a $4.5 million grant from the Andrew Mellon Foundation will support graduate students in various departments in the College of Arts and Sciences.
