UNCG launching aid initiative

Thanks to a $6 million gift in 2009 from an anonymous donor who made gifts to several universities in the U.S., the University of North Carolina at Greensboro is launching an initiative that offers financial and academic aid to help eligible students graduate with little or no debt.

Known as the UNCG Guarantee and modeled on the Carolina Covenant at UNC-Chapel Hill, the new initiative is need-based and initially is expected to provide support or 30 to 40 first-year students.

Over four years, the initiative initially will fund 130 to 140 scholars over four years, and will support 12 percent of students who meet eligibility requirements.

The aid package will include tuition and fees; on-campus room and board; and books, supplies and other educational expenses.

For in-state students, $14,500 a year currently covers those costs.

UNCG says the new initiative addresses a key goal of the school's strategic plan and of the UNC Tomorrow Plan of the UNC system - expanding educational access and opportunity.

UNCG plans to conduct a fundraising effort this year to raise additional funds for UNCG Guarantee.
