UNCW gets $1.25M for nonprofit professorship

WILMINGTON, N.C. - With a matching gift from the Dan Cameron Family Foundation, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington will create a professorship to focus on the nonprofit sector.

The Betty and Dan Cameron Family Distinguished Professorship of Innovation in the Nonprofit Sector will be housed in the school's Department of Public and International Affairs.

The foundation's $667,000 gift is being matched with $250,000 from the C.D. Spangler Foundation and $333,000 from the state's Distinguished Professors Endowment Trust Fund.

The goal of the new post is to strengthen the nonprofit sector in southeastern North Carolina by encouraging partnerships between nonprofits, business and government, and by getting students involved in outreach activities.

"Establishing this professorship in the nonprofit sector is consistent with the work efforts that my mother and father were involved in throughout their lives," William H. Cameron, president of the foundation, says in a statement.

The university aims to have the new professor in place for the start of fall classes in 2011.
