USAID gives UNC-CH $181 million

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The United States Agency for International Development, or USAID, has awarded the Carolina Population Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill up to $181 million, the largest grant ever received by the university.

The grant is intended to help the center continue its MEASURE Evaluation Project, which monitors programs addressing family planning, maternal and child health, nutrition and disease prevention worldwide.

The project, currently entering its third phase, has a presence in nearly 50 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America.

Beyond the $181 million, the award offers the opportunity for up to $125 million in additional funding for evaluations requested by individual countries over the next five years.

"This award provides a fabulous opportunity to strengthen our understanding of global health programs and improve the collection, analysis and use of population and health information," Sian Curtis, project director and professor of maternal and child health at the School of Public Health at UNC-CH, says in a statement.
