Wake Boys & Girls Clubs reach goal

The "2008 Positive Place for Kids Campaign" has reached its $1.3 million goal for the Boys & Girls Clubs serving Wake County.

And the Zebulon Boys & Girls Club has received a pledge of $50,000 from the Continuous Blessings Foundation, which plans to contribute $200,000 over the next five years.

"This is the most money ever raised in our annual campaign," Jim Little, board chair, says the Wake clubs' annual campaign, a four-month effort that involved 300 community volunteers.

For the first time, the campaign included a challenge grant that matched any new or increased corporate contributions dollar for dollar up to $25,000.

Top donors included WakeMed, Cargill, RBC Bank, Bank of America, The Allstate Foundation, Progress Energy, SAS, Duke Hospital,  Capmark Foundation, Continuous Blessings Foundation, Capital Bank, AT&T, Carolina Hurricanes Foundation, Rex Hospital and First Citizens.

Media campaign sponsors Time Warner Cable, Capitol Broadcasting and MyriadMedia also supported the campaign with contributions.

Co-directing the campaign were Little and Guy Lucas, board vice-chair.

Located in seven locations throughout Wake County, the Boys & Girls Clubs organization serves more than 4,000 at-risk youth ages six to 18.

The pledge to the Zebulon club includes $40,000 for naming rights at the group's facility at Zebulon Middle School, and to reserve naming rights for a gym the Boys & Girls Club will build at its permanent facility in Zebulon.

The remaining $10,000 sponsors the club's day-camping session through July 18 in Nash County.

The Continuous Blessings Foundation, formed in memory of former Zebulon resident Chris Bunn, plans to contribute $200,000 over the next five years for the gym.

Bunn died last year from cancer.

A financial adviser at Merrill Lynch, Bunn was active in sports in the area and played football and baseball at Virginia Military Institute.
