WakeMed reaches $5 million milestone

RALEIGH, N.C. - The WakeMed Foundation is a quarter of the way toward its goal of raising $20 million to fund a state-of-the-art children's hospital in Raleigh.

The foundation's Just for Kids Kampaign has raised $5 million, more than half of what it hopes to bring in by the end of this year.

To date, WakeMed employees have raised $1 million and a group of area physicians has raised almost $400,000 of its $1 million goal.

In 2008, WakeMed logged more than 142,000 pediatric-patient contacts and sees more children than any other hospital in the state.

"Demand for pediatric services currently exceeds supply, and the needs will continue to become more acute as our region continues its unprecedented growth," Jack Radford, executive director of the foundation, says in a statement.

The new 41,045-square-foot, 45-bed hospital will include an inpatient unit with private rooms, a pediatric intensive-care unit, an expanded high-level neonatal intensive-care, as well as additional pediatric sub-specialists.
