Americans give nearly $1 billion for Haiti relief
The Chronicle of Philanthropy says Americans gave nearly $980 million in the nine weeks after the Haiti earthquake, including $369 million to the American Red Cross, $106.7 million to Catholic Relief Services and $56.5 million to UNICEF, AOL News reported March 17 (see Haiti charity story).
Philanthropist big supporter of atheist causes
After selling his family business to GlaxoSmithKline for $2.9 billion last year, 35-year-old Todd Stiefel has become one of the biggest philanthropic supporters of atheist causes, The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., reported March 18 (see atheists' benefactor story).
Another private, nonprofit college becoming for-profit
An investor group and private equity firm are buying Dana College in Nebraska, a move that will make it the 11th private college since 2004 to be converted from nonprofit to for-profit status, The Associated Press reported March 17 (see for-profit college story).
