Atlanta colleges slash spending in recession

Private colleges in Atlanta have cut jobs, closed programs and slashed spending to cope with the financial squeeze fueled by the rececession, with Emory University, for example, cutting over 250 vacant positions and 211 filled positions since fall 2008, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Feb. 24 (see Atlanta colleges story).

NYC may ban home-made baked goods from school fundraisers

Nine months after barring most fundraising food sales in New York City schools, a city panel was set to vote on revised rule to let student groups to sell items like Pop-Tarts and Doritos during the school day, but not brownies, zucchini bread or anything else homemade, The New York Times reported Feb. 23 (see schools fundraising story).

Purdue awarded $25 million grant

Purdue University received a $25 million grant from the National Science Foundation to create a center to develop new ways to analyze information, the Journal and Courier in Lafayette, Ind., reported Feb. 24 (see Perdue gift story).

Yale boosts tuition, room and board after drop in endowment

With Yale University's endowment plunging to $16.3 billion from $22.9 billion in the 12 months ended June 30, Yale College will increase undergraduate tuition, room and board 4.8 percent to $49,800 for the 2010-2011 school year, Bloomberg reported Feb. 23 (see Yale endowment story).
