The Foundation Center has tapped Bradford K. Smith, head of a Switzerland-based family foundation and a former Ford Foundation executive, to take over as president.
He assumes his new post on Oct. 1, succeeding Sara Engelhardt, who is retiring from the New York City-based organization after 17 years at the helm.
Smith serves as president of the Geneva-based Oak, which works in 41 countries around the world.
Before that, he served for 10 years as a vice president for the Ford Foundation, where he created and led the funder's Peace and Social Justice Program.
"With unprecedented levels of private wealth being devoted to philanthropy and the nonprofit sector, the public increasingly wants to know how these resources are being applied to the diverse challenges facing society," Smith says in a statement.
"The Foundation Center, with its half-century of dedication to accountability and transparency, is perfectly positioned to meet this heightened demand for knowledge about the field," he says.
The Foundation Center is supported by more than 600 foundations and provides the sector with research, information and tools.
