Britain adopts fundraising standards

The United Kingdom has adopted national fundraising standards for nonprofits developed by Adrian Sargeant, philanthropic studies professor at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.

Nonprofits will use the standards, recently approved by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills, to guide recruitment, hiring, evaluation and professional development of fundraisers.

The new standards are based on professional practice and fundraising research.

Previous standards in the UK and U.S. have mapped necessary skills but did not outline the body of knowledge drawn from research that fundraisers need to know, the Center on Philanthropy says in a statement.

"Understanding the latest available research on fundraising and incorporating it into fundraisers' daily work is vital to improving fundraisers' effectiveness and accountability and to elevating the profession," says Sargeant, the Robert F. Hartsook Chair in Fundraising the Center.
