Cal State rapped for putting public funds in campus foundations

A faculty group says it found evidence officials at California State University are improperly depositing public funds into the accounts of nonprofit campus foundations and have failed to fix the problem despite auditors' warnings, the Los Angeles Times reported Aug. 25 (see university foundations story).

Packard gets go-ahead for new downtown building

The city council in Los Altos, Calif., approved a development agreement that will let the David and Lucile Packard Foundation build a 45,000-square-foot, two-story office building downtown that will form a campus with another building it owns across the street, with the foundation paying the city $3.4 million for parking and environmental projects, The Mercury News reported Aug. 25 (see Packard Foundation story).

Gates criticized for teaming with billionaire linked to tobacco firm

An Australian academic and anti-tobacco activist says billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates' partnering on a vaccination project with a Mexican billionaire with ties to a tobacco company is "plainly inconsistent" with Gates' position on funding tobacco-control projects, ProBono Australia reported Aug. 25 (see Gates tobacco story).

Merck, Gates investing more in fighting HIV/AIDS in Africa

Merck & Co. is teaming with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to commit another $60 million to treatment and care of people living with HIV, treatment of tuberculosis, and prevention of HIV, The Associated Press reported Aug. 24 (see HIV/AIDS partnership story).
