Campaign calls Americans to serve

The Presidential Inauguration Committee and the Advertising Council launched a new public-service advertising campaign that aims to rekindle the spirit of volunteerism among U.S. citizens.

In television and radio advertisements, President-elect Barack Obama encourages Americans to log onto USAService.org to learn about more than 6,000 volunteer opportunities available throughout the U.S. as part of the "Renew America Together" initiative.

The effort, organized by Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden, gets underway on Jan. 19 in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

"President-elect Obama believes each of us, as Americans, has a responsibility to do what we can for our communities and fellow citizens," Josh Earnest, communications director for the inauguration committee, says in a statement. Many media companies have donated air time to the advertising campaign, including CBS Television and Radio, NBC Universal, CNN and the Turner Networks, FOX Networks, Clear Channel Radio, Comcast Spotlight and Entercom Radio.

The Advertising Council is a nonprofit that launches public-service campaigns with the goal of promoting community well-being, education, environmental preservation and preventive health.
