Colleges ranked on service
The San Diego, Berkeley and Los Angeles campuses of the University of California, respectively, top Washington Monthly's annual rankings of U.S. colleges and universities based on the schools' focus on service and encouraging students to give back, the magazine reported Aug. 23 (see college rankings story).
Wesleyan's former investment chief target of lawsuit
Connecticut's attorney general is suing Thomas Kannam, former investment chief at Wesleyan University, and three companies, charging they misused the school's endowment for personal trips and other expenses The Associated Press reported Aug. 23 (see university endowment story).
Broad investing $300 million in museum
Billionare Eli Broad is investing $80 million to $100 million to build a museum in Los Angeles to house his art collection, plus $200 million for an endowment to support its operations, The Wall Street Journal reported Aug. 24 (see Broad museum story).
Gates gives Brown $3 million to boost high-school students
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is giving $3 million to Brown University to support its program to keep more students on track to graduate from high school and prepare for college or careers, The Examiner reported Aug. 23 (see Brown University story).
