Colleges, universities target student donors

With giving rates among alumni at all-time lows, and state support for higher education lagging, fundraising efforts at public and private schools alike are targeting current students, aiming to cultivate them as lifetime donors, The Associated Press reported Aug. 26 (see college donors story).

Medical center criticized for reducing charity care

The University of Texas Medical Branch, which has a long tradition of providing care for indigent patients, is under fire for dramatically reducing its level of charity care and putting rising pressure on nonprofits that serve the uninsured, the Houston Chronicle reported Aug. 25 (see charity care story).

Recession hurting Bay Area LGBT nonprofits

A survey by the San Francisco-based Horizons Foundation finds most nonprofits in the Bay Area that focus on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community have been hurt by the recession, The Bay Area Reporter reported Aug. 26 (see LGBT nonprofits story).

Prudential Foundation giving $3.6 million
