Education giving stalls, may fall

Charitable giving to the education sector likely was flat in the year ended Dec. 31 and industry insiders are anticipating a decline in 2009, a new survey says.

Giving to schools, colleges and universities is predicted to have grown by 0.3 percent in calendar 2008, says a survey by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

And donations for the 2008-09 fiscal year are expected to fall slightly, say senior fundraising professionals from over 2,300 institutions.

Over the past two decades, education giving has grown by an average of 7 percent a year, the council says, and has fallen in only three years.

"It should be noted, however, that these figures are based on early estimates and forecasts and that many institutions will experience results that vary from these averages given their specific circumstances," John Lippincott, president of the council, says in a statement.

The CASE Fundraising Index is conducted twice a year, once at the end of the fiscal year ending June 30, and one at the end of the calendar year.
