Effort aims to boost nonprofit sector

A new initiative launched by Independent Sector aims to help the 1.4 million nonprofits in the U.S. have a greater impact on the people and communities they serve.

Envisioning our Future, which kicked off in late July and will last for six months, will seek input from thousands of people involved with nonprofits and foundations in order to identify strategies to "advance the common good."

In late July, Independent Sector convened 75 people connected to the sector for a "StrategyLab" in Colorado, and in September, a series of online conversations will reach out to nonprofit staffers and stakeholders.

Input from these discussions will be discussed at Independent Sector's annual conference in November and insights from the entire process will be distributed to the sector in early 2010.

"Moments of crisis are when it is vital to think strategically about how to maximize the positive impact that the nonprofit sector can have despite financial challenges," Marguerite Kondracke, president and CEO of America's Promise Alliance and a co-chair of the initiative, says in a statement.
