Experience, agility seen as plus for job-seekers

While unemployment is on the rise across the U.S., some nonprofits are hiring, and sector experience and adaptability are among the traits recruiters are seeking, an executive-search expert says.

Given the need to manage cash flows and budgets, many nonprofits are on the lookout for finance and development professionals, Karen DeMay, a senior director for Bridgespan Group's executive search team, says in a recent article.

And some organizations are hiring chief executives and program professionals, although competition is high for all open positions, she says.

To get noticed in the current environment, it is important for job seekers to clearly and concisely communicate their experience, strengths and achievements, backed up with metrics whenever possible.

Experience in reducing costs or reorganizing staff and programs is valuable currently, as is any prior experience adapting quickly to a changing environment.

Entrepreneurial skills and experience, either in starting an organization or program, are in high demand, as is a tolerance of risk and ambiguity, says DeMay.

For people moving from the for-profit to the nonprofit sector, it is important to highlight experience on a nonprofit board or the fundraising committee of a board.
