Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, has launched the World Wide Web Foundation to promote Internet openness, access and usage worldwide.
With a five-year, $5 million seed grant provided by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Web Foundation plans to begin operations early next year.
The new foundation aims to fund research to extend the Internet's health, education and emergency-relief benefits to people around the globe, with a special emphasis on underserved communities.
"Through this new initiative, we hope to develop an international ecosystem that will help shape the future Web," Berners-Lee says in a statement. "A more inclusive Web will benefit us all."
Berners-Lee, who founded the organization, serves as director of the World Wide Web Consortium and co-director of the Web Science Research Initiative.
