Foundation sees jump in donations

Despite the economic slump, contributions to the giving fund of the Atlanta-based National Christian Foundation jumped to $254 million in the quarter ended Sept. 30, up 27 percent from $199 million in the same period last year.

Donations to the fund included over $60 million in non-cash gifts.

"The givers we serve continue to exhibit an amazing spirit of generosity," David Wills, president of the foundation, says in a statement.

Grants made by the foundation stood at $327 million at the end of the third quarter, a 46 percent increase from the same period in 2007.

Projections for the holiday season remained steady for both the foundation and its 33 local affiliates across the U.S., the foundation says.

The National Christian Foundation, the 24^th largest charity in the U.S., was founded in 1982 to help people live more efficiently and easily.

Since its inception, the foundation has made $1.8 billion in grants.
