Funders’ response to crisis mapped

To help U.S. foundations better respond to the growing economic crisis, the Foundation Center has created an interactive map tracking grants and other foundation investments.

Foundations so far have awarded over $56 million in grants and other investments in the face of the economic downturn, says the map, which shows information at the local, county and state levels.

"The real-time information in this map will help grantmakers fill gaps and foster collaborations to meet the pressing needs of nonprofits and the communities they serve," Bradford Smith, president of the Foundation Center, says in a statement.

Illinois has received over $39 million in foundation funding related to the economic crisis, more than any other state, according to the map.

The information in the map also is viewable based on the type of recipient, such as education or health groups, as well as by subject, such as employment or housing.

The map includes some large grants, including $2.5 million from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago as part of the funder's $68 million effort to stem foreclosures, and $2 million from the Ford Foundation to the Detroit Economic Growth Foundation, also for foreclosure prevention.

Other grants will provide food, shelter and other basic needs for struggling families.

Grants will be added to the map as they are made; grantmakers are asked to send funding announcements to the Foundation Center by emailing mr@foundationcenter.org.
