Funding for advocacy seen having big benefits

A study of Los Angeles County nonprofits by the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy estimated that for every dollar invested in advocacy groups, local residents got $91 in benefits, the Los Angeles Times reported March 2 (see advocacy funding story).

Pickens giving $100 million to Oklahoma State

Billionaire oilman T. Boone Pickens will make a $100 million estate gift to Oklahoma State University, bringing his total giving to his alma mater to over half-a-billion dollars as the school laun ches the public phase of a $1 billion, seven-year campaign, the Associated Press reported Feb. 26 (see Pickens gift story).

Boston philanthropist tied to Madoff may have to return some money

A federal court ruling in the Bernard Madoff bankruptcy case could mean Carl Shapiro, the Boston philanthropist who got $1 billion in profits from investments with the swindler, might have to give back some of that money, The Boston Globe reported March 2 (see Madoff investor story).
