Funding for advocacy seen having big benefits
A study of Los Angeles County nonprofits by the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy estimated that for every dollar invested in advocacy groups, local residents got $91 in benefits, the Los Angeles Times reported March 2 (see advocacy funding story).

A federal court ruling in the Bernard Madoff bankruptcy case could mean Carl Shapiro, the Boston philanthropist who got $1 billion in profits from investments with the swindler, might have to give back some of that money, The Boston Globe reported March 2 (see Madoff investor story).
