Gates Foundation to double vaccine spending

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation plans to double to at least $10 billion its spending on vaccines over the next 10 years, saying vaccinations could save the lives of as many as eight million children by 2020, The New York Times reported Jan. 29 (see Gates Foundation story). The investment comes amid worries that funding shortfalls from other groups like the World Health Organization could slow development of new vaccines, the Wall Street Journal reported Jan. 29 (see vaccine funding story).

Coca-Cola to combine philanthropy with Super Bowl ads

Coca-Cola is combining social media and philanthropy with the airing of two commercials during the Super Bowl Feb. 7, donating a dollar to Boys and Girls Clubs of America for every person who participates on Facebook, Stuart Elliott wrote in a blog in The New York Times Jan. 27 (see Coca-Cola social media story).

Bill Gates Tweets on philanthropy

A week after making his debut on Twitter, Bill Gates has 365,225 people signed up to @BillGates to hear his thoughts about "cool things" he's discovering through his philanthropic work, USA Today reported Jan. 27 (see Bill Gates Twitter story).
