Health funders invest in nursing

Building on the almost $8 million they've invested so far, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Northwest Health Foundation are pumping another $2.2 million into boosting the U.S. nursing workforce.

The "Partners Investing in Nursing's Future" program awards grants to local foundations across the country that in turn work to create and sustain the nursing workforce.

Over the past three years, the program has provided grants to 69 foundations, which have created more than 300 partnerships that are working to alleviate the national nursing shortage.

The 2009 grants went to 10 foundations:

  • Arkansas Community Foundation
  • Blue Foundation for a Healthy Florida
  • Community Foundation of Great River Bend, Iowa
  • Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation and Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, West Virginia
  • Hinds Community College Development Foundation, Mississippi
  • John T. Vucurevich Foundation and First Interstate Bank Foundation, South Dakota
  • Sangamon County Community Foundation and Kindred Healthcare Foundation, Illinois
  • Tufts Health Plan Foundation and Edward J. and Virginia M. Routhier Foundation, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island
  • Vetter Foundation, Nebraska Health Care Foundation, Iowa West Foundation and University of Nebraska Foundation
  • West Central Initiative, Frank W. Veden Charitable Trust, Initiative Foundation, Minnesota
