Holidays may still be merry for charities

While consumers plan to spend less this holiday season, most say they will continue to give to charity, and some may give more this year than last, a new survey says.

While seven in 10 people say they plan to trim their spending this year, about the same number say they do not plan to cut back on their donations to charity, says PayPal's 2008 Holiday Survey.

And one in 10 plan to give more this year than last.

Among all online shoppers, almost three-quarters plan to donate this year, a 13 percent increase over last year.

About 83 percent of online shoppers age 45 and older plan to donate this year, more than their younger counterparts, the survey says, and 85 percent of those making at least $100,000 a year plan to give.

Online shoppers also are becoming more environmentally friendly this year, PayPal says.

About one in four say they plan to give gift cards or "green gifts," like organic foods or recycled housewares.

PayPal, which processes online payment transactions, says it signs up about 250 nonprofits a day and manages online donations for more than 100,000 nonprofits.
