Home Depot helps Habitat go green

A $30 million commitment from the Home Depot Foundation will fund a new program to build at least 5,000 energy-efficient homes through Habitat for Humanity.

The donation includes cash and in-kind assistance in the form of building materials and technical training and support.

The new program, "Partners in Sustainable Building," will affect about 17 percent of Habitat homes being built over the next five years and is expected to reduce energy costs for families who purchase the homes.

"This partnership will provide our affiliates with the additional resources and training they need to create homes that are more durable and energy efficient, which will make them even more affordable to our homeowners," Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International, says in a statement.

The program will begin with a one-year pilot effort to construct 30 homes in a variety of climates and in rural and urban areas to test the program's impact.

Homes will be built to nationally-recognized green building standards and will contain energy-efficient equipment, water-conservation fixtures and will provide good air quality for residents.
