The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University this fall will launch a new undergraduate program leading to a bachelor of arts' degree in philanthropic studies.
The new program will be designed to give students the know-how and hands-on experience needed to succeed in entry-level jobs in philanthropy and the nonprofit sector.
The program will explore include the role and impact of philanthropy and nonprofits, including such issues as the ethics and values of philanthropy; giving and volunteering; the history of philanthropy; nonprofit fundraising; and building civil society.
"Philanthropy and the nonprofit sector are becoming increasingly complex, and those who plan to work in this field need more sophisticated education than ever before," Patrick M. Rooney, executive director of the center, says in a statement.
The new undergrad degree, he says, "will attract more students to choose a career in philanthropy, and its' graduates will be better prepared to help nonprofits serve their constituents and make a meaningful impact in their communities."
The center previously created the world first master of arts' and doctoral degrees in philanthropic studies.
