The W.K. Kellogg Foundation is investing $200,000 in an initiative to better understand the factors that will shape America's civil society in the next 20 years.
The "Future of Civil Society Initiative" will be launched by the Urban Institute's Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy.
Researchers will look at trends in civic engagement and advocacy and lobbying activities and expenditures, and will analyze the birth of new, small nonprofits to better understand where and how they do their work.
The effort also will take a close look at Washington, D.C., to uncover the civic, political and service opportunities that area nonprofits offer to immigrant communities.
"The Future of Civil Society Initiative's goal is to get unique information and insights into the hands of those who will use them to make better grants, provide better services and collaborate with new partners," Elizabeth Boris, executive director of the Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy, says in a statement.
