Michigan to offer master’s in fundraising

For students in its higher-education master's program, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor next year will offer a concentration in philanthropy, advancement and development.

The new program, set to begin in the fall of 2009, aims to boost graduates' leadership skills in areas like government relations, marketing communications, alumni relations and fundraising, as well as institutional, corporate and foundation relations.

"Fundraising is more than a set of techniques," says John Burkhardt, a clinical professor of higher education at Michigan. "Graduates of this new program will have a depth of knowledge unmatched by any others."

The 30-credit program is the first in the U.S. to focus on fundraising in the higher-education field, the school says.
