New center aims to boost transparency of Chinese foundations
The China Foundation Center has been launched to help increase the transparency of Chinese charities, which sometimes struggled with public suspicion of mismanagement and even corruption, and initially will archive data on over 1,800 foundations throughout China, The Wall Street Journal reported July 12 (see China philanthropy story).
Donor ties pledge to university to approval of governor's plan
A hedge-fund manager who formerly headed the math department at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and now is the biggest donor to the school reportedly is considering a pledge of $150 million to the school on condition that some version of a plan by New York Gov. David A. Patterson to overhaul the state's public universities is approved, The New York Times reported July 9 (see university donor story).
Wikipedia expanding volunteer-created online encyclopedia
The foundation that runs the Wikipedia web site plans to hire 44 people, doubling its staff, and raise $20 million to pursue its vision of a volunteer-created encyclopedia nearly anyone can edit, The New York Times reported July 9 (see Wikipedia story).
