Local YWCA chief to head Charlotte's United Way.

Jane McIntyre, head of the YWCA in Charlotte, N.C., will head the region's United Way, which for the past year has struggled with a controversy over compensation for its ousted CEO, the Charlotte Observer reported August 8 (see United Way story). After last year's annual fund drive fell $15 million short of its goal, McIntyre faces a big challenge with this year's drive, which begins in a month, the Observer reported Aug. 9 (see United Way fundraising story). A federal judge recommended dismissing discrimination claims by Gloria Pace King in her fight for the lucrative pension and salary payments that led to her ouster a year ago, the Observer reported August 7 (see United Way lawsuit story).

Charities blame ‘cash-for-clunkers' program to drop in car donations

While car buyers have cashed in on the "cash-for-clunkers" program, trading in gas-guzzlers for new fuel-efficient cars and rebates of up to $4,500, some charities that depend on vehicle donations for funding say they're getting fewer cars and trucks, the Associated Press reported July 9 (see clunkers charity story).
