Fundraising contributes to Princeton's top ranking

Alumni giving, which has helped create a $15.8-billion endowment for Princeton University, is a major reason for the school's top national ranking in U.S. News & World Report, The Chicago Sun-Times reported Aug. 20 (see Princeton story). More than six in 10 Princeton alumni donate to the school, compared to just over four in 10 for second-ranked Harvard University.

North Carolina food bank holds fuel drive

The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, which provides food for people in 34 counties covering 19,000 square miles, is holding a fuel drive this month to raise money after a 61 percent increase in diesel-fuel expenses, The News & Observer reported Aug. 20 (see fuel story). The nonprofit aims to raise $25,000, which it says is enough to cover its fuel costs for a month.

Video game improves cancer treatment, report says

A video game created by California-based nonprofit HopeLab may help adolescent and young-adult cancer patients stick to their treatments, says a recent medical study, The Examiner reported Aug. 19 (see cancer story). Study participants who played the video game Re-Mission took medications more consistently and gained a better understanding of cancer-related issues, the study says.

* The IRS plans to release finalized instructions today for completing the new Form 990, Government and Politics Watch reported Aug. 19.

* More than 60 bicyclists have begun the last leg of the Journey of Hope, a 4,000-mile cross-country trek to raise money for Push America, a philanthropy associated with the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity that supports people with disabilities, The Gazette reported Aug. 20.
