Pew lends hand to California cultural groups

A project of the Pew Charitable Trusts expanded to California this spring to help the state's cultural organizations learn more about themselves and better demonstrate their impact on communities.

The Cultural Data Project was created to gather standardized information about cultural organizations throughout the U.S.

With the support of the Hewlett Foundation, the James Irvine Foundation and other major funders, the project will create a database that cultural organizations can use to better convey the impact of the arts to policymakers and the media.

As many as 5,000 groups will participate in the project to streamline their grant applications, gain a better understanding of their audiences and improve their record-keeping systems.

The Pew Charitable Trusts launched the project in Pennsylvania four years ago and expanded it to Maryland the following year.
