Principles for social responsibility released

ASAE and the Center for Association Leadership issued a draft of "Guiding Principles for Socially Responsible Associations," the product of collaboration among charities, organizations, business partners and the United Nations.

The 30-point document advises associations on how to become more socially responsible, offering guidance on topics such as advocacy, human rights and diversity.

The principles are designed to supplement the UN Global Compact, a universally-vetted set of goals addressing many of the world's most challenging problems.

The draft fulfills a key goal of the 2008 Global Summit on Social Responsibility, which was held April 30 to May 2.

"This is an issue we believe to be important to the future of our professional community, one that needs to be fully integrated into our everyday operational thinking," John Graham IV, president and CEO of ASAE, or the American Society of Association Executives, and the center, says in a statement.

Readers may submit comments on the draft until October 16. The final document will be presented for approval in November.
