Private fundraising grows at British universities

With total philanthropic cash income British universities generated in 2008-09 growing to 511 million pounds, or $751.7 million, from 430 million pounds, or $632.6 million, the previous year, despite the recession, fundraising represents one of the few increasing, consistent and robust income streams available to higher education, Eric Thomas, vice-chancellor of Bristol University and chair-elect of the board of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education Europe,  wrote in an opinion column June 22 in The Guardian (see university fundraising story).

Students learn about giving

Students in public and private schools across metro Atlanta are learning about giving through classes and service projects, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported June 21 (see student philanthropy story).

Lynch calls on wealthy to give back

Investor Peter Lynch, echoing the challenge by billionaires Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, is calling on wealthy Americans to give back much of their wealthy to charity, Reuters reported June 20 (see wealthy giving story).
