Private fundraising grows at British universities
With total philanthropic cash income British universities generated in 2008-09 growing to 511 million pounds, or $751.7 million, from 430 million pounds, or $632.6 million, the previous year, despite the recession, fundraising represents one of the few increasing, consistent and robust income streams available to higher education, Eric Thomas, vice-chancellor of Bristol University and chair-elect of the board of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education Europe, wrote in an opinion column June 22 in The Guardian (see university fundraising story).
