Stanford to fund social innovators

Stanford's business school has launched a new fellowship program designed to help its graduates create nonprofits that benefit society.

The Social Innovation Fellowships, created by the business school's Center for Social Innovation, will provide both financial and technical support for graduating students.

"As a leadership development school, we want to empower people to pursue their dream," Kriss Deiglmeier, executive director of the Center for Social Innovation, says in a statement. "This allows us to continue to develop leaders who want to contribute to important social change."

The one-year fellowships come with an $80,000 stipend for one student, or $120,000 for a two-person team, as well as strategic support and advice from experts on entrepreneurism.

Eligible applicants must strive to create a nonprofit aimed at alleviating a social or environmental problem and must work full-time on their project during the fellowship year.

The first round of fellows will be chosen by June of 2009. Information on the fellowships is available online.
