George Steinbrenner, who died July 13 and was best known as owner of the New York Yankees, also was known for his compassion and philanthropy, the Los Angeles Times reported July 13 (see Steinbrenner philanthropy story), and was a major philanthropist in his adopted home of Tampa, Fla., ABC Action News reported July 13 (see Steinbrenner charity story).

Recession dampened giving by Wisconsinites
