Students raise funds for Darfur

Vigil

Student vigil in Chicago

Hundreds of students across the country learned about fundraising and advocacy as they competed to raise money and awareness to benefit their peers in Darfur.

Students from about 440 middle schools and high schools nationwide raised a total of more than $112,000 to fund advocacy efforts aimed at stopping the genocide in Sudan Darfur and boosting humanitarian aid.

The Dollars for Darfur School Challenge, sponsored by the Save Darfur Coalition, encourages students to organize their town teams to sign up for the competition, learn how to organize fundraising efforts and track their results.

The 10 winning schools were invited to Washington, D.C., June 6 to lobby members of Congress:

  • Blythewood High School - Blythewood, S.C.
  • George Washington Middle School - Ridgewood, N.J.
  • ‘Iolani High School - Honolulu, Hawaii
  • Krieger Schechter Day School - Baltimore
  • Orange Avenue School - Cranford, N.J.
  • Pleasantville Middle School - Pleasantville, N.Y.
  • Shepherd Hill Regional High School - Dudley, Mass.
  • Tappan Middle School - Ann Arbor, Mich.
  • Wichita Collegiate School - Wichita, Kan.
  • Wyoming High School - Cincinnati, Ohio
