The American Writers Museum Foundation has been awarded a second grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The grant will help speed planning and exhibit design for the museum's building phase. A previous NEH grant helped fund the museum's concept plan and the museum is now in the process of transforming the plan into a blueprint for the physical space and exhibit design.

The  AT&T Aspire program, a quarter billion dollar campaign funded by the AT&T Foundation to help more students graduate from high school prepared for college and careers within a globally competitive marketplace, has awarded $100,000 to University of California, Los Angeles' Graduate School of Education.  The gift will support an initiative to help increase learning and graduation rates among students in grades 7-12 through an examination of common assessments aligned with the Common Core State Standards

Independence Blue Cross (IBX) announced that Back on My Feet, a nonprofit teaching critical work and life skills to individuals living in homeless and transitional facilities, has been voted the winner of the company's Season for Giving online charity campaign. The Back on My Feet Philadelphia chapter received $5,000 from Independence Blue Cross, while four runners-up were awarded $1,000 each from the Philadelphia-based health insurer. Through Facebook, IBX invited fans to vote for their favorite of 50 charities.

Digital Wish, a nonprofit that brings technology to K-12 classrooms to prepare students to thrive in the global economy, has unveiled its 2013 grants calendar featuring 63 new technology grant awards for K-12 classrooms. By uploading a technology-based lesson plan to Digital Wish's lesson plan library, teachers become eligible for smartphones, software and IT curriculum grant awards. New grants will be announced regularly and awarded each month. Go online to view the grants calendar. 

Family Matters of Greater Washington, one of the nation's oldest, nationally-accredited social services organizations, announced that it has received $28 million from the estate of philanthropist Richard A. Herman. The bulk of the funding will go toward the establishment of the Richard A. Herman Charitable Trust, which will be used to further Family Matters' mission of improving the family and community lives of those less fortunate, as well as help launch a new series of innovative arts programs for seniors and youth.

Goodwill, serving the people of southern Los Angeles County, is one of 45 Goodwill® agencies across the country to take part in a program that provides job training and placement services to women. The program, known as Beyond Jobs and funded through a $7.7 million grant from the Walmart Foundation, will create a larger impact by reaching more women who are unemployed or underemployed. This new funding will help broaden the reach of a program that was started in 2010 in five U.S. markets serving 1,342 women, to serving an expected 12,250 women in 45 communities.

The Hadassah Foundation announced that so far in 2013, it has awarded grants totaling $200,500 to organizations in Israel and the United States that empower girls and women. In addition to supporting five first-time grantees, the foundation also awarded "sustaining" grants. These grants provide general operating support and were awarded to five long-term grantees which have played a particularly critical role in supporting the economic empowerment of women in Israel. The Joseph Clayes III Charitable Trust has awarded $3.5 million to Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego. The gift will establish the Joseph Clayes III Endowment Fund to provide a permanent, unrestricted source of funding for the organization, which operates 47 guest rooms and a Family Care Center for families with critically ill or injured children being treated at local hospitals.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation announced a new $9.5 million commitment to support funders in meeting community information needs. The funding expands the Knight Community Information Challenge, which helps community and place-based foundations make an impact on issues they care about by investing in news and information projects.

The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, a national public charity committed to eliminating illiteracy in America, announced a new director of giving. Teresa Borcheck joins the foundation's fundraising team and will help build upon the success of providing children and their parents with opportunities to learn together and achieve a better life.

Rebuilding Together OKC hired Jennifer Thurman as new executive director to serve the nonprofit organization. Thurman will begin this new position on Feb. 25 and previously served as the deputy director for the Homeless Alliance in Oklahoma City.          

The Bridgespan Group  announced that Paul Carttar, former director of the Social Innovation Fund and a recognized leader in the fields of social innovation and nonprofit management, will be returning to Bridgespan as a senior partner in the organization's New York City office.

Koret Foundation board president Tad Taube announced that the board of directors has promoted
Tina Frank, director of grant operations to vice president and chief operating officer. As vice president and COO, Frank is responsible for planning, organizing, and staffing all grant making functions.

Saint Luke's Foundation of Cleveland announced the appointment of Christie Manning to the position of senior program officer for Resilient Families. Manning will provide leadership and oversight for all aspects of the foundation's Resilient Families program area, the grant portfolio designed to catalyze and sustain opportunities to ensure that community resources meet families' needs and empower parents to implement their vision for the health and well-being of their families.

Perri Klein has been named MazelTot coordinator at Rose Community Foundation. Klein will oversee MazelTot's network of partner organizations and serve as a resource to help families connect to Jewish life and one another.

Brewer Direct, a full-service direct marketing and fundraising consultancy serving nonprofit organizations, has named Tadd Sutton as vice president of client services. Sutton will oversee all account team activity.

The Philanthropic Initiative announced that Jamie Jaffee has become its new managing partner. Jaffee is best known for her role as the first president of the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund. Jaffee has continued to contribute to the field of philanthropy as president of her consulting and advisory firm, working with executives and leaders of corporations, foundations and nonprofit organizations. 

The Henry Armstrong Foundation welcomed former heavyweight contender Henry Tillman aboard as an honorary board member.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a national program honoring students in grades 5-12 for outstanding volunteer service, announced this year's state honorees and distinguished finalists. The awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, are granted each year to the top middle level and high school volunteer in each state and the District of Columbia, and to state-level finalists across the country. J. Chris Hawk III, MD, accepted the annual Roper St. Francis Foundation (RSF) Physician Champion Award. The award is presented each year to a physician who exhibits exemplary service to the RSF Foundation.

Bridge Builders Community Partnership Initiative, established in 2003 as collaboration of community-based organizations committed to improving child welfare in the Bronx, and The Children's Village, a 161-year old charity serving children and families, announced a strategic alliance. The organizations will retain their independence, but are developing a strategy for effective collaboration and partnership that will enable them to best serve children and families involved with the child welfare system across the Bronx.

Commonfund released the 2012 NACUBO-Commonfund Study of Endowments, which highlights investment strategies, spending rates, gifts and donations, etc. for fiscal year 2012. The full release and report can be found online.

white paper from DKT International, a private provider of family planning and contraception in 19 developing countries, details  how the organization has worked with four national governments to shape policies that enhance the legal and programmatic climate for birth control.

Trickle Up, a poverty alleviation organization focused on the poorest of the world's poor, released its 2012 annual report. The report details Trickle Up's accomplishments throughout the year and highlights new and positive developments helping the world's poor.

SOS Children's Villages, a global organization dedicated to providing family-based care for orphaned and abandoned children, announced the launch of a new Nursing and Midwife Scholarship program in Ethiopia. Together, SOS Children's Villages and Johnson & Johnson started the scholarship program at the SOS Nursing School in Makalle, Ethiopia, to provide young people with the opportunity to pursue a career in nursing or midwifery.

LA Fitness is hosting a nationwide zumba event to support Augie's Quest, a nonprofit initiative dedicated to curing Lou Gehrig's Disease. NBC's Today Show  debuted a series of television public service ads featuring Today's anchors - Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker and Natalie Morales - on behalf of four social issues: fatherhood involvement, hunger prevention, emergency preparedness, and shelter pet adoption. The ads were created pro bono by advertising agencies throughout the country in partnership with the Ad Council, a nonprofit and producer of PSA campaigns for more than 70 years.
