Gulf Coast Community Foundation awarded $4,282,305 in donor grants and small community grants in the first quarter of 2013.The bulk of the grants-more than $4.15 million-were made at the recommendation of individuals or organizations that have created donor advised or designated funds at Gulf Coast. The foundation also awarded $79,379 in Community Grants from endowed funds at the foundation, and $47,552 in grants funded through its GulfCoastGives.org website between Jan. 1 and March 31.

A $300,000 grant to the Democracy Collaborative Foundation Inc. (DCF) of Cleveland will provide six Native American organizations with hands-on learning in the Evergreen Cooperatives model of worker-owned enterprises. The grant to DCF is one of 48 worth $4.9 million the Northwest Area foundation announced in the first quarter of 2013 aimed at building assets and wealth through job creation, small business development, and personal financial education. For a full list of the 48 grants awarded, visit www.nwaf.org/content/firstqgrants13.

The Kids In Need Foundation, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free school supplies to economically disadvantaged schoolchildren and under-funded teachers, and Dixon Ticonderoga, home of the Ticonderoga No. 2 pencil, have partnered to ensure that Dixon Ticonderoga pencils will be on the shelves of all Resource Centers in the Kids In Need National Network. Dixon Ticonderoga will provide its pencils, along with other items, to the Kids In Need Foundation's 29 Resource Centers.  The donated items then will be made available to teachers from low-income schools, who visit the Resource Centers to obtain free supplies for their students.

Blackbaud announced the global expansion of its Community Matters Grants Program, modeled after The Blackbaud Fund that has been providing grants to nonprofits in its Charleston-based community for 17 years. The expanded grant program will continue Blackbaud's commitment to funding grant requests focused on education of disadvantaged populations, general operations and capacity building.

United Way Worldwide recognized 3M with the 2013 United Way Spirit of America award for philanthropy, volunteer engagement and community impact. As a science and technology company, 3M's focus is encouraging innovation through STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). In 2012, 3M donated $56.6 million in cash and in-kind to education, health and human services, arts and the environment.

United Way Worldwide also presented Deloitte LLP with the Special Recognition Fleur de Lis Award for the most Tocqueville Society Members (individuals giving $10,000 or more annually) nationwide in a single organization. This is the 11th consecutive year Deloitte has won this award.

Jennifer E. Baltimore has been named deputy general counsel of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Baltimore will assist in managing all legal aspects of the center's activities, including the center's roles as presenter of performing arts programming, as a leader in arts-in-education, and as manager of the 16.3 acre facility in Manhattan.  

The Genesis Prize Foundation, the operating entity for the Genesis Prize, announced that Wayne L. Firestone has been named its president. Firestone will work with a selection committee of judges that includes Elie Wiesel and Natan Sharansky set to announce the laureate in the fall of 2013. Firestone will also initiate a global campaign targeting young Jews in their 20s and 30s, providing inspiration and a historical and cultural connection to the next generation of leaders.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation announced that Dr. Patricia A. Gabow, a national leader in hospital reform and public health care delivery, has joined its board of trustees. Gabow currently serves on several health care and health policy commissions, including the federal Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission and the National Governors' Association Health Advisory Board.

John W. Slattery, managing director for Morgan Stanley, has been elected to the Covenant House board of directors, which oversees programs for homeless youth in 22 cities in the United States, Canada and Latin America.  

The Evanston Community Foundation announced the appointment of six members to the board of directors to serve three-year terms effective May 1.  The new members at large are Pete Henderson, Patty Reece, Gene Servillo, Larry Singer, Keith Terry and Judy Witt, and new board chair Joan Gunzberg.

World Relief, the humanitarian arm of the National Association of Evangelicals, announced its support for the President's Advisory Council on Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships recommendations for strengthening partnerships to combat human trafficking, set forth in a report, Building Partnerships to Eradicate Modern-Day Slavery. The report outlines 10 recommendations on what more the government can do to counter modern-day slavery.

Salsa Labs Inc. (Salsa), creator of the online and integrated platform for nonprofits of all sizes to build their support base, launched its redesigned website, www.salsalabs.com. The site comes in conjunction with an overall rebranding effort, aimed at reflecting Salsa's efforts to help nonprofits and allowing them to better serve clients through their online presence.

The Global Poverty Project announced that Ben Affleck, Josh Groban, Sophia Bush, Hunter Biden and husband and wife Cooking Channel personalities Debi Mazar and Gabriele Corcos have committed to take the 2013 Live Below the Line challenge by living on $1.50 of food and drink for at least one day between April 29-May 3 to raise awareness about extreme poverty. Live Below the Line aims to help people better empathize with the challenge that 1.4 billion people face, and encourages global citizens to participate and raise funds to support the partner organizations. Project HOPE, a Virginia-based humanitarian organization, and Merck, a leader in global healthcare, known as MSD outside of the U.S. and Canada have partnered to vaccinate 1.7 million people in Nicaragua and Honduras against pneumococcal infections, a major cause of pneumonia, meningitis and serious sinus conditions, and have also made major strides in improving health infrastructure, treatment and access to medical equipment in the two countries. More than 1,273,000 people have received PNEUMOVAX® 23 in the HOPE-Merck project in the two countries since 2010.

More than 70,000 Comcast and NBCUniversal employees, their family and friends, and community partners across the country are expected to spend Saturday, April 27, giving back to their communities as they take part in Comcast Cares Day, a single-day corporate volunteer effort. In its 12th year, Comcast Cares Day will also go international for the first time with NBCUniversal managing projects in England, France, Germany and New Zealand. This year will also mark more than 3 million volunteer hours and half a million volunteers since Comcast Cares Day first began in 2001. 

As April is Cancer Awareness month, Ticketbud has pledged their service to help those fighting cancer by allowing them to utilize 100 percent of all funds raised for their own purposes. Ticketbud offers complimentary ticketing services for any event raising funds for a cancer charity or organization, no matter how large the event. To date, through the use of Ticketbud approximately $180,000 has been raised by cancer fundraising organizations.

The "Devotedly Dad" letter contest is open to America's fathers and grandfathers as an opportunity to encourage a love of reading and writing in their homes. Dads are asked to write a letter to a child or grandchild about the importance of literacy and learning.  Write from the heart, the head or the funny bone and simply sign it..."Devotedly, Dad."  Go online to learn more about the contest and for details on how to enter.

The Grant Professionals Association (GPA) has added free professional development webinars to the list of its membership benefits. There are more than 60 live and recorded webinars for members to access. Individuals that view the webinars can receive continuing education units through the Grant Professionals Certification Institution to go towards their GPC credential. Most of the webinars also qualify for continuing education units for the CFRE credential, the credential of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
