The Children's Medical Center Research Institute at UT Southwestern will receive up to $7.5 million to be paid over 10 years from the W.W. Caruth, Jr. Foundation of the Communities Foundation of Texas. The gift will support faculty recruitment and start-up costs for new physicians and scientists.
The LIVESTRONG Foundation received $6.2 million from its partner Movember, the global men's health charity that asks men to grow a moustache for 30 days each November, to raise funds and awareness for cancers affecting men. The funds will be allocated over four years to develop a male-specific program helping those affected by prostate and testicular cancer.
Knight Foundation named eight winners of the Knight News Challenge on Open Gov, awarding the recipients more than $3.2 million. The winning projects will provide new tools and approaches to improve the way people and governments interact. Honorees include: Civic Insight; OpenCounter; Open Gov for the Rest of Us; Outline.com; Oyez Project; Procur.io; GitMachines; and Plan in a Box.
The Richard and Mary L. Gray Foundation have made a $1.25 million gift to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association.
Domestic Violence Solutions for Santa Barbara County, Calif., received a bequest of more than $1 million from Susan Trescher, the largest donation from an individual in the organization's 37-year history.

Project HOPE announced the 2013 recipients of the Project HOPE Global Health Awards. The awards recognize outstanding accomplishments and life-changing impact in health worldwide. This year's honorees include: The Project HOPE Global Health Leadership Award - Vincent A. Forlenza, chairman, CEO and president of Becton, Dickinson and Company; Project HOPE Global Health Partner Award - Dr. Susan M. Briggs, general and trauma surgeon at the Massachusetts General Hospital and associate professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School; and The Project HOPE Global Health Impact Award - The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Major League Baseball (MLB) Commissioner Allan H. "Bud" Selig is the recipient of the B'nai B'rith International Distinguished Humanitarian Award. The award recognizes personal and professional commitments to improving the lives of others at the community and global levels. MLB's humanitarian efforts under Selig include contributions to such programs as Stand Up To Cancer and Welcome Back Veterans.
The Gateway for Cancer Research announced Dr. Pierre-Yves Dietrich as the recipient of the inaugural Cancer Researcher of the Year Award. The award recognizes Gateway-funded researchers who demonstrate excellence in the cancer research field while also positively impacting the lives of those living with cancer.

Native Americans in Philanthropy and Common Counsel Foundation announced the launch of Native Voices Rising, a research and re-granting project designed to support grassroots groups led by and for Native communities in American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian communities. Native Voices Rising establishes a mechanism for donors to invest in organizations led by Native people through a grantmaking vehicle whose decision makers are also members of Native communities.
AmeriCares is seeking grant proposals from nonprofit organizations in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut meeting the health needs of Hurricane Sandy survivors. Grants ranging from $25,000 to $150,000 will be awarded for projects improving health and access to care in storm-damaged communities.
