News about grants, gifts

The Boston Foundation received a record $131.7 million of gifts and grants and gave $97.7 million in grants to nonprofits throughout Greater Boston during fiscal year 2012-13.

Hyundai Hope On Wheels donated $10 million to the Hyundai Cancer Institute at the Children's Hospital of Orange County. The organization will hold eight 5K runs through the rest of the year to raise funds and awareness of pediatric cancer. 

University of Miami alumnus Joshua Cohen and his wife Megan gave $1 million to create the Cohen Family True Gentleman Endowed Scholarship Fund, which will give scholarships to a female and a male UM student who are leaders in their sorority or fraternity.

Virgin has become the title sponsor of the Virgin Kitesurfing Armada along Hayling Island in England this September. The event benefits Snowcamp, a charity which offers skiing, snowboarding and life-skills programs for inner city youth.

RYOT and CrowdRise's #STARTARYOT Challenge has raised in excess of $285,000 for various charities in 15 days from more than 2,800 individual donations.

Nominations have opened for the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, which honor student volunteers. Two nominees will be selected from each state and Washington, D.C., and 10 will receive national honors. Applications can be submitted online through Nov. 5.

Grinnel College is accepting nominations for the 2014 Grinnel Prize, which will give $100,000 to two leaders in social justice under age 40. Nominations can be submitted online through Nov. 8. 

Grace Ko was hired as the vice president of development and alumni affairs at New York University's Langone Medical Center.

Shannon Pruitt and Kathy Rokita were appointed to the board of directors of the Angelman Syndrome Foundation.

Kathy Kaplan was named director of development for Virginia Tech's Division of Student Affairs.

Brian Pacheco was hired as social media and communications strategist for the National Hispanic Media Coalition.

Dr. George Calin, professor of experimental therapeutics at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, received the 2013 Julie and Ben Rogers Award for excellence in research.

AT&T was recognized as the 2013 Supporter of the Year by Meal Exchange, which involves youth in fighting hunger in Canada.

Abila, formerly Sage Nonprofit Solutions, a provider of software solutions for nonprofits and government agencies, acquired McLean, Va.-based Avectra, a provider of web-based customer relationship management solutions for associations and not-for-profits.

Digital Processing Solutions joined the Association for Retail Technology Standards' Change4Charity team and will work to create technology standard for retailers to collect donations at the point of sale.

Nonprofit Finance Fund and The Good Analyst created a partnership to offer impact investing services that allow foundations to improve social outcomes while growing their funds.  

The Cure Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) launched a newly redesigned website to inform the public about its goals and objectives, important updates and upcoming events.

Vision2Systems LLC, a Dallas-based software company, has created an online/offline platform that can add fundraising and giving functionalities to websites.

News about opportunities, initiatives

The Junior League has partnered with Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures to provide children's oral care through mobile vans at underserved communities in four countries.

The Bark Business Breakfast Tour seeks to raise at $100,000 for K9s for Warriors, which trains shelter dogs to serve veterans suffering post-traumatic stress syndrome. The tour, which features writer Windy Diamond and TV and sports celebrities, will visit eight cities through November. For details, click here.

The National Association for the Self-Employed and Business and Professional Women's  Foundation created a partnership to help women veterans and military spouses start their own small businesses. 

The Brooke Jackman Foundation, a children's literacy organization, holds the 4th annual BJF Read-a-thon at the Barnes & Noble Tribeca on Sept. 7.

The 6th annual Friends of the Poor Walk/Run on Sept. 28, organized by the U.S. Society of St. Vincent de Paul, will raise money for anti-poverty programs. For details on locations, click here.

MomsRising seeks volunteers to join the Good Food Force's fall campaign and help raise awareness of healthy school foods, junk food marketing targeted at children and strategies to reduce childhood obesity.

Home for Our Troops, Volvo Rents and HGTV star Ahmed Hassan are building three new homes for severely injured veterans in Temecula and El Cajon, Calif.

In partnership with The Mission Continues, Benjamin Moore donated 550 gallons of paint and labor from its employees to refurbish locations used by firefighters and other first responders in Washington, D.C., St. Louis, New York, Dallas and Phoenix.
