Cities of Service announced the first round of Impact Volunteering Fund grants to 18 U.S. cities, funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies. Grants from the Cities of Service Impact Volunteering Fund will support mayors who are harnessing the power of volunteers to address priority problems in their communities. Grants ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 will support efforts in Atlanta, GA; Austin, TX; Baltimore, MD; Birmingham, AL; Duluth, MN; Fall River, MA; Flint, MI; Indianapolis, IN; Kalamazoo, MI; Little Rock, AR; Nashville, TN; Orlando, FL; Philadelphia, PA; Phoenix, AZ; Pierre, SD; Pittsburgh, PA; Providence, RI; and Richmond, CA. 

Edison International announced the renewal of a grant to After-School All-Stars (ASAS), a national non-profit organization that provides comprehensive after-school programs.  The grant will support the We Are Ready program, a program that centers around dropout prevention and high school readiness, focusing on 8th graders in low-income areas.

Heading Home, Inc., a Boston area agency devoted to helping the homeless, announced that it has been awarded a $36,000 grant from the Franklin Square House Foundation for a renovation project at Heading Home's Medford Family Life Education Center (MFLEC), a transitional housing program for local homeless single women and their children.

Kevin Hagan, president and CEO of Feed The Children, announced the addition of Matt Panos and Corey Gordon to the nonprofit's executive team. Panos will serve as chief development officer. He will be responsible for expanding Feed The Children's fundraising programs and capabilities, as well as working to develop and implement a comprehensive global fundraising strategy to expand financial support for services here in the U.S. and internationally. Corey Gordon has been named chief marketing and communications officer. Gordon will be responsible for all marketing and communications efforts, in addition to expanding relationships with corporate, church and government partners to grow financial and in-kind support.

Juliana Eades, President and Founding Executive Director of the New Hampshire Community Loan Fund, received the fifth annual Ned Gramlich Award for Responsible Finance from Opportunity Finance Network (OFN)

The Rosenberg Foundation announced the election of Sarah Stein, president of Hall Capital Partners, LLC, to its Board of Directors. As a member of the Board, Stein will help carry out the Foundation's tradition of grant-making to promote human rights and economic inclusion for California's most vulnerable communities.

Hillside Family of Agencies received the Agency of the Year award presented by Alliance for Children and Families, a national membership association dedicated to achieving a vision of a healthy society and strong communities for children, adults and families. Hillside Family of Agencies was chosen to receive the award because of its demonstrated excellence in innovative programming, impact through advocacy efforts on local, state or national levels and board participation and support. The Agency of the Year award is given out in four categories based on budget, and Hillside Family of Agencies received the award in the $19 million and above category.

Two Native community development financial institutions (CDFIs), Lakota Funds and Robin Danner of the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, were honored in recognition of their commitment to excellence in the Native CDFI industry at the 2012 Native CDFI Awards Ceremony. 

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter received the 2012 CDC Foundation Hero Award at a ceremony at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC Foundation is honoring President Carter for three decades of visionary leadership focused on building international public-private partnerships to save lives, reduce suffering and provide hope for millions of the world's poorest people, as well as for his commitment to achieving a more peaceful and healthy world for us all.

Opportunities and initiatives

The CareFusion Foundation announced the launch of a new $500,000 grant program to help identify and share infection prevention best practices across hospitals and health care facilities nationwide. The CareFusion Foundation will award up to $500,000 in grants to health care organizations to help fund clinical training programs that improve infection prevention practices. The maximum grant for any one recipient will not exceed $50,000. Eligibility requirements and grant applications are available at www.carefusion.com/clinicalexcellence.

City National Bank announced that it is now accepting applications for grants to support
literacy-based projects at public and private elementary, middle and high schools in five states. The bank also announced that with this being the 10th Anniversary of its Reading is The way up literacy program that it would be awarding $100,000 in literacy grants this year. This is the eighth consecutive year that City National has been offering literacy grants to educators in its service area, which includes California, Nevada, New York, Tennessee and Georgia. Educators interested in applying for a literacy grant can access an online application by visiting www.readingisthewayup.org.
