To help the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan, AmeriCares sent an emergency team with medical aid for 20,000 survivors and gave funding to partner organizations, Heifer International is aiding its 4,000 project participants, Xoom is donating all money transfer fees on donations to the Philippine Red Cross, One Hour Translation is providing free translation services to rescue teams and survivors, and the USANA True Health Foundation donated $20,000 to International Relief Teams.

Walmart donated $1.5 million to Operation Homefront to provide toys and meals for military families and bring deployed soldiers home for the holidays. Walmart's donation of $500,000 to the Fisher House will provide lodging for the families of service members undergoing medical treatment.

Gen. Colin Powell made a $5 million donation to and will lead the board of visitors for the Colin L. Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership at the City College of New York. Twenty-six individuals were also selected to join the board of visitors. For details, click here.

The Multilateral Investment Fund, Inter-American Development Bank and National Audubon Society pledged $2.6 million to support eco-tourism and job creation efforts in Belize, Guatemala, Paraguay and the Bahamas.

Gateway for Cancer Research's annual Cures Gala in Chicago raised nearly $2.1 million for clinical trials for cancer treatment.

The W. K. Kellogg Foundation pledged $1.5 million to CFED to support children's savings accounts to help low- and moderate-income children attend college.

Pfizer marks the 15th anniversary of the International Trachoma Initiative through which it has donated 340 million doses of antibiotics distributed in 28 countries in Africa and Asia.

Kids in Distressed Situations and Fashion Delivers raised $1.4 million in donations and several thousand dollars' worth of product donations at its annual fundraiser gala at Chelsea Piers.

The Mutual of Omaha Foundation awarded $177,500 in grants to seven nonprofits in the fourth quarter of 2013. For details, click here. Applications are being accepted for funding in 2013.

Apartment Investment and Management Company donated $160,000 to support scholarships for students who live in subsidized housing offered through the National Leased Housing Education Fund.

The Evanston Community Foundation raised $221,000 at its Celebrate! Evanston benefit.

Northern Light issued a $50,000 challenge grant to the Massachusetts Salvation Army to fund the distribution of Thanksgiving food baskets in the Greater Boston Area. To donate, click here.

GoDaddy donated $50,000 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation which will fund early detection and mammograms for those in need.

The Autism Services Grants Council awarded grants totaling $50,500 to 11 Florida-based nonprofits. For details, click here.

Siemens Industry sponsored a daylong event for Chicago Public Students to interview for scholarships from historically black colleges and universities.

California-based Morgan Drexen has raised $21,660 for the Children's Hospital of Orange County.

The Ana Grace Project of Klingberg Centers, which seeks to help children at risk of violence, has been created in honor of Ana Grace Marquez-Greene, who was killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Its inaugural event is the "Love Wins" conference at the University of Hartford on Dec. 2. To register, click here

HELP USA plans to break ground on the Hardy Williams Veterans Center in Philadelphia in December. It will have 61 units to provide permanent and supportive housing for veterans.

DonorPro, a provider of nonprofit fundraising solutions, was for the third consecutive time ranked as one of the best affordable donor management software solutions by nonprofit industry think-tanks Idealware and NTEN.

Arthur Moossman will receive the Founders' Award from the Child Abuse Prevention Program.

Crystal Brown was elected vice chair of the NEA Foundation's board of directors. Sean Patrick Corcoran, Christian Duffus, Peter Heckman, Julian Vasquez Heilig and Carmen Ortiz-McGhee were also appointed to the board.

Jamia Wilson was selected as executive director of YTH and is creating an intergenerational leadership model.

Ronald P. O'Hanley was appointed to the Boston Foundation board of directors.

Alan Davis, Jillian Joseph, Arturo Sida and Rhonda R. Trotter joined the national board of directors of A Better Chance.

Joshua Nash was elected chairman of Birthright Israel Foundation's board of directors.

Goodwill, Serving the People of Southern Los Angeles County recognized select partners as Employers of the Year: Regency Oaks Post Acute Care Center, dd's Discount Stores, Alltrade Inc., Herbalife, Inc. and Gonzalez Northgate Markets.

News about opportunities, initiatives 

More than 300 at-risk children will attend the Wender Weis Foundation for Children's 4th annual Holiday Heroes at San Francisco's AT&T Park on Dec. 9. Joe and Jennifer Montana will be awarded the inaugural Inspiration Award for their philanthropy. Proceeds will benefit local children's charities. To purchase tickets, click here

The Hyundai Hope on Wheels 5K Run/Walk in Maui, which will benefit children battling cancer in Hawaii, will take place in Lahaina on Jan. 4. Funds will go to the Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children. To register, click here
