Bay Area grantmakers

Grantmakers in the Bay Area represent just over a third of California's independent, corporate, community and operating foundations but account for 45 percent of foundation assets in the state and 52.4 percent of total giving, a new report says.

Assets of the nearly 2,500 foundations in the region totaled over $45 billion in 2009, and their giving totaled over $3.1 billion, says Key Facts on Bay Area Foundations, a report by the Foundation Center.

Grantmaking by foundations in the region grew 77 percent from 2000, while their assets grew 34 percent, with their giving and assets growing faster than foundations in California and throughout the U.S. for the 10-year period.

The report also says education and the environment are funding priorities in the region, a focus consistent with California grantmakers overall, and that foundations in the region targeted the biggest share of their funding to the economically disadvantaged.

Foundations with the most assets in the region in 2009 were the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, nearly $6.9 billion; David and Lucile Packard Foundation, nearly $5.7 billion; and Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, $5.2 billion.

Foundations giving the most in 2009 were the Hewlett Foundation, $342.5 million; Genentech Access To Care Foundation, $292 million; and Packardk Foundation, $282.8 million.
