Nonprofits in the U.S. and Canada generally are optimistic about raising money the final three months of 2011, a new survey says.

Among 175 organizations that solicit individual donations for financial support and responded to an online survey Sage North America conducted among its clients between late September and early October, 33 percent expect to raise more funds in the fourth quarter of 2011 than they did in the same period last year.

Fifty-three percent had raised about what they expected so far this year, and 32 percent had raised fewer funds than expected.

"Nonprofit are no longer waiting for our tighter economic conditions to improve and are adjusting their fundraising expectations accordingly," Krista Endsley, senior vice president and general manager for nonprofit solutions at Sage, says in a statement.

For the entire year, 63 percent of nonprofits that responded expect to meet their fundraising goals for individual donors, while 24 percent expect to fall short.

The survey also foundation that 21 percent of organizations using mobile strategies as part of their year-end fundraising campaigns expect to exceed their fundraising goals, compared to 11 percent of organizations not using mobile strategies.

Eighty-four percent of nonprofits conducting year-end fundraising plan to use direct mail, compared to 69 percent that plan to use email, 60 percent that plan to use special events, and 54 percent that plan to use Facebook pages.
